Dario Cataldo undergoes successful surgery following horrific Volta a Catalunya crash

Stage 1 of the Volta a Catalunya saw a brutal crash in the final kilometers, as several riders crashed in a downhill section. Dario Cataldo was the worst affected of those. He has now underwent a successful surgery to fix "his femoral head fracture" according to Trek - Segafredo.

The Italian crashed at high speed and looked in distress right after. He was the worst off from the accident, abandoning the race. A "fractured left femoral head & right acetabulum (the ‘ball & socket’ joint of the hip), two transverse process fractures of the lumbar spine without neurological impact, multiple broken ribs with a collapsed lung on both sides and a fractured left collarbone," was the communication of the team later that day on his injuries.

After several days however feedback is good. The team has now stated: "He has also been moved from the ICU to the surgical ward where he remains under observation to asses if additional surgery is required on his lumbar spine fractures."
