Chris Froome will have to endure an extra obstacle that he was not expecting, as a recovery from injury is now necessary. After having been informed it wasn't the case a few days back, today Chris Froome has been confirmed to have suffered a hand fracture and has abandoned Tirreno-Adriatico.
"Confirmed last night that I fractured my scaphoid on stage 2 so I won’t continue today. Heading home for surgery. I can’t catch a break," he wrote on Twitter. The Israel - Premier Tech rider crashed on stage 2 and underwent an X-ray which cleared off a fracture.
However the situation was dire and after concluding stage 4 he underwent an MRI to understand the situation. It was then confirmed that he did in fact have a fracture in the scaphoid and has in the meantime abandoned the race. It is unknown at the time being if he will require surgery.
"After crashing on stage 2 of Tirreno - Adriatico, Chris Froome underwent an X-ray on his left wrist which did not indicate a fracture. Despite managing to race stages 3 and 4, Chris underwent advanced imaging at the earliest possible moment after stage 4 where an MRI confirmed a scaphoid fracture," the team wrote. "Chris will return home to see a specialist to determine whether surgery will be necessary and to devise a treatment and recovery plan."
