The Volta a Catalunya today saw one of the worst crashes of the season which affected several riders towards the end of the stage. Dario Cataldo of Trek - Segafredo was one of the riders involved and the worst affected. The team has revealed in an update an extensive list of fractures.
"A CT scan performed at the hospital revealed that Dario has sustained a fractured left femoral head & right acetabulum (the ‘ball & socket’ joint of the hip), two transverse process fractures of the lumbar spine without neurological impact, multiple broken ribs with a collapsed lung on both sides and a fractured left collarbone," the press release revealed.
The crash took place inside the final 6 kilometers. At high speed in a straight descent section, a touch of wheels led to several riders coming down. Among them was Cataldo, who was for several minutes on the race broadcast as race personnel and medical assistance arrived. It was evident that the Italian was badly injured following the fall, but the initial report reveals very serious injuries.
"He is conscious and hemodynamically stable and will be transferred to another hospital in Catalunya in the first instance. After a second assessment at the new hospital in Girona, he will undergo surgery to fix the femur fracture," the American team concluded. Giulio Ciccone has remained safe and finished in the leading group on the opening day, and he will carry the team's hopes of success.
