When Biniam Girmay sent his
Intermarché - Wanty teammates to the front however, the attacking duo's time out front was brought to an end. As such, heading into the final 25 kilometres, the peloton was again at the head of the race albeit now slightly dwindled down due to the high pace.
On the final ascent of the Trieu-Knokteberg, the attacks fired again with a trio of Sjoerd Bax, Lorenzo Rota and Rasmus Tiller getting themselves ahead of the race. Although the chase were working relatively hard behind, the leading trio had garnered themselves an advantage of 15 seconds over the peloton as they headed into the final 5km.
Through the Flamme Rouge and the trio were still dangling off the front of the peloton. As the leadouts began however, they were then swept up.
Marc Hirschi was the first to open things up but the UAE Team Emirates man was eventually passed by a very powerful display from Biniam Girmay and
Axel Zingle who took second place.
