Although the Gran Salida of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana is already known to be held in Monaco, surprisingly the 2025 edition remained a mystery... until now.
According to Italian media La Repubblica, and confirming the persistent rumours, the start of La Vuelta will take place next year in the Piemonte region. The 80th edition of the race will start in Venaria Reale, a municipality located in the city of Turin, and will complete 4 stages on the Italian soil before its final march to Spain.
This will be the 6th occasion in which the Vuelta a España will start outside the country. The previous 5 were in Lisbon 1997, Assen 2009, Nimes 2017, Utrecht 2022, and the last one took place once again in Lisbon this year.
What is known so far about the first stages of the Vuelta a España 2025 has been revealed by media Torino Cronaca. The opening day, which will start in Venaria Reale, will end in Novara. It will be a day for the sprinters, meaning that the GC favourites will keep their firearms cold for the time being. In 2024, the Vuelta started with an inaugural time trial in Portugal won by Brandon McNulty. Under normal circumstances, one of the fast men will wear red after the first day in Italy.
The second stage, also in Italy, will be a hilly test from Cherasco to Alba. Nothing more is known at this time. The penultimate stage, which will be contested on Italian roads, will start in San Maurizio Canavese and is expected to finish high in Ceres.
The final day in Italy will begin with a start in Bussoleno. From there, the peloton will approach and cross the border into France before reaching a currently unknown finish city (rumours speak of passing the mythical Colle delle Finestre). The road will then fly back to Spain with the finish of stage 5.
