Breaking: Caleb Ewan also out of Milano-Sanremo

After the likes of Julian Alaphilippe, Davide Ballerini, Sonny Colbrelli and Jasper Stuyven all having to skip Milano-Sanremo due to illness, another big absence will be in Caleb Ewan. In a race he has been basing his season around, he was one of the main favourites, but has also come down with illness that will force him to miss the race.

The team has said on social media: "Due to an illness Caleb Ewan will finally not take the start in Milan-Sanremo. The medical staff and Caleb Ewan waited until the final moment to take this difficult decision, but in the end it was the only option." This leaves the team with little option for result in the race, as Philippe Gilbert and Florian Vermeersch are now set to be the protected riders within the Belgian team.

Ewan has said in a team press release: “I am disappointed that I am not able to take the start. I was in good form and ready for a hard race, but like many riders, I faced a stomach flu at the worst time. Together with the team we had to decide that it is better to now focus on different goals.”

Lotto Soudal for Milano-Sanremo: Maxim van Gils, Philippe Gilbert, Florian Vermeersch, Filippo Conca, Roger Kluge and Frederik Frison.
