BORA - hansgrohe were perhaps the most active team in today's stage finale of the Giro d'Italia, coming close to a stage win as they dealt a combination of sharp attacks - which just barely failed to elude the sprinters.
German Lennard Kämna has made it clear that his goal is to target stages throughout the race, having lost over a minute in today's finale after a stinging attack. Kämna made a move inside the final four kilometers as the pace calmed down in the ascent to Visegrád, however the peloton's chase was too much: "We didn’t plan to attack in the final, but when I had a good position, and the pace went down a little I thought it’s a good moment to give it a try. In the end it was longer than I thought to the line, and I blew up. But sensations have been really good, so I can be happy."
Despite not being the most suiting day for the German team's leaders, they were aggressive in search of the pink jersey. Whilst Jai Hindley and Emanuel Buchmann arrived in the main body of the peloton, Wilco Kelderman gained four second on most rivals after attacking inside the final 500 meters. The Dutchman showed intentions of going for the stage win, but has nevertheless came off the day with good sensations.
"Actually, I was caught up behind that crash at the bottom of the climb. I had to dig deep to get back in position and I hit the front just after Lenni [Kämna] was caught. I wanted to carry the momentum even I knew it was quite early. I think we can be really happy with today," he said.
Tomorrow's time-trial will set up an important day in the first week, as the GC contenders are set to create further gaps between themselves and Kelderman will be eyeing to enter the mountains ahead of the competition.
