"Better luck next time" - Isaac Del Toro goes all-in on Mount Lofty to conquer Tour Down Under but comes up just short

Isaac Del Toro was the revelation of the Tour Down Under and he ended it guns blazing. The Mexican rider lit up Mount Lofty with a series of stinging attacks as he looked to conquer the ochre jersey, but has to settle with - an already impressive - podium place.

“I tried it and I'm happy with that. For my first experience it would have been better if I had won, but this is of course also good. Although, it could have been even better," the ambitious 20-year old said in a post-race interview. "I've been trying to make up for lost time. And more importantly, I enjoyed my first race at WorldTour level.”

Del Toro led the race following his triumph on stage 2, but lost it at Old Willunga Hill as Stephen Williams gathered enough bonifications to take the race lead into his hands. On the last day however the UAE Team Emirates rider felt better, and with 1.6 kilometers to go launched a powerful attack the caused the decisive split of the day.

In the final sprint he didn't have the legs to take the win, being beaten by Williams and Jhonatan Narváez who also finished ahead of him in GC. “It is important to keep learning and give everything. You never know what to expect in cycling. But I do know that I'll give it my all, and maybe even more, as soon as I get on the bike," Del Toro concludes. "I did that again in this stage, but it turned out not to be enough for the victory. Better luck next time."
