Ben Healy has had a breakthrough spring. He had shown talent in the past but has achieved several high-end results over the last two months, taking several wins and performing at a very high level in the Ardennes. At the Giro d'Italia he looks to return to his best form and chase a stage win.
"My result was a bit lower than I expected, I like to think I can do a good time trial on my day and I've come here feeling fresh after the Ardennes. It was pan flat for the first part, and being 60 kilos, I'm sure that doesn't help, but it would have been nicer to have had a better result at the end. I tried to hold something back and then smash it on the climb," the Irishman shared in an interview with Cyclingnews.
Stage 3 was a day that could've seen attacks late on but no-one dared with the presence of Trek - Segafredo and Jayco AlUla in the head of the peloton. Stage 4 to Lago Laceno will be an opportunity for the breakaway to succeed however it may be too climbing-heavy. The EF Education-EasyPost is set to try on more rolling stages throughout the Corsa Rosa and if he finds his best legs he will be a serious contender to take a triumph in one of the many tough stages of the race.
“When I saw I was going well, I thought there was no harm in carrying on with the Ardennes program. I'll take the opportunities when and where they come, but first I'm going to see how the race is raced," Healy concluded. "After that, I'll take it from there." At the start of stage 4 he departs as 32nd in the overall classification, 2:07 minutes behind Remco Evenepoel.
