Although Primoz Roglic attempted to push the overall leader of the Giro d'Italia, Remco Evenepoel at the intermediate sprint, the Slovenian opted against making a similar attempt in the finale of the race.
“It was important to get to the finish line in one piece," the Jumbo-Visma leader revealed in a post-stage interview with his team's official website. “We did try to get a good result, but that was not the top priority. If the opportunities had been there, we wanted to capitalize on them. But because of all the hectic pace, it is especially good that we stayed out of trouble.”
The team's sports director, Marc Reef was also quick to point out that more important days are to come as far as the general classification battle goes. “The last fifty kilometers were quite technical and the roads were very slippery due to the rain,” says the Dutchman. “We finish in a good way, because Primoz came across the line in one piece.”
“We expected that the strong sprinters would ride for the win here. But it was a bit more hectic than expected due to the weather. Michel Hessmann and Koen Bouwman assisted Primoz well and tried to lead him to a good classification," he continues. “There are a lot of altimeters and the finish is after a difficult climb. I expect that there will be some testing by the classification riders. Then we know even better what the relationships are at the moment.”
