It's been an insane start to the stage at the #Giro! Attacks came thick and fast from all over the place, the peloton split only to get back together, and we still don't have a breakaway after more than 60 kilometers. Photo: @GettySport
Although Soudal - Quick-Step and Remco Evenepoel has very publicly outlined stage 4 as an opportunity to pass on the Maglia Rosa for a few days, the Belgian is keen to ensure that if it goes, it goes to the right rider.
“I expect a hard opening of the stage, so the finish is difficult enough,” said the leader of Soudal - Quick-Step. “It goes really steep for three kilometres, then a bit downhill and a flat finish. It will be with a thinned peloton, but I do not expect that there will be major differences.”
Evenepoel currently has a 32-second lead over second-placed Joao Almeida and although rumours suggest the race leader is keen to give his team a rest and pass on the responsibility of holding the Maglia Rosa, giving it away to any of his general classification rivals is a massive no-no.
“They do indeed have to make up for time and will therefore take every opportunity. So today and stage seven are the first opportunities for them. For me it is clear: follow, follow and follow again," he explains. "The road to Rome is still far, I still try to save my strength as much as possible. But on the other hand, I'm not going to complain if I lose it tonight. However, it is not the intention that we let a group ride away for fifteen minutes because there could be a strong boy who can wear the jersey for a long time.”
