Biniam Girmay has until now finished on the Top10 of every Tour Down under stage, and climbed to second overall after today only one second behind Isaac Del Toro. However, he came up just short of victory on stage 4, with Sam Welsford taking the cherry on top once again.
"The team protected me well all day ahead of this last sprint of the Tour Down Under. Madis Mihkels positioned me perfectly before the last corner, 500 meters from the finish, but at the end Sam Welsford was again the fastest in the peloton," Girmay said in a post-race interview. The Eritrean sprinter had finished third on the opening day and fourth on the second, today he improved on his best result by one spot.
In the slight uphill drag to the line, the Intermarché - Wanty sprinter had the speed and was the closest competitor to Welsford who has dominated the race's sprints. However it was not enough. He sits in an interesting position in both classifications, and the points is not impossible if he still performs on the final two days or joins breakaways.
"On Saturday, the finish will be explosive with two passes over the top of Willunga Hill, after a beginning of the stage on flat and wide roads. I expect a tough battle between the overall favorites, which is ideal for Georg Zimmermann and our other climbers," he says, at the team focuses elsewhere now. "But I also intend to give it my all and see how it goes, because I have nothing to lose."
