Astana Qazaqstan Team at rock bottom in UCI standings, relegation fears already emerging

The Astana Qazaqstan Team has started the 2023 season the way it ended 2022: horribly. The loss of Miguel Ángel López, it's most powerful rider, has ended his chances of getting points in the first races of the year and Mark Cavendish, his great bet, is not working for the moment.

Thus, Raúl Banqueri has published the weekly classification of the UCI ranking and the Astana team is really sunk in the table, as reported by Raúl Banqueri. The border with relegation (18th team) is currently marked by Israel - Premier Tech with 1625 points. Nearby is Arkea-Samsic, with 1,565 points and TotalEnergies a little further behind with 1,232.

The Kazakh team, however, is 28th with 426.74 points, located in the table behind teams that have not been invited to the Vuelta a Espana such as Euskaltel Euskadi and just ahead of two other continental Spanish teams such as Burgos BH and Kern Pharma.

The three-year period has just started, but being already 1200 points from salvation is a worrying situation. We don't know what will happen to Astana in the coming months. Nor if Mark Cavendish and company are going to score like crazy when the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France arrive. What we do know is that, today, things are worrying.
