Annemiek van Vleuten and Mark Cavendish win AIOCC Trophy awards

Two legendary figures in the sport of cycling, Annemiek van Vleuten and Mark Cavendish have both picked up awards at the most recent AIOCC ceremony in Burgos, Spain.

The AIOCC Trophy is a ceremony of an association of various cycling organizations with riders recognised for their contributions across their respective careers. Former notable names to have received the award include the likes of Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil among others.

This year, Burgos in Spain was the venue for the awards with the likes of Tour de France General Director Christian Prudhomme in attendance. Aside from the awards, there was also a discussion about the growing need to increase rider safety within races.

“This year we unfortunately experienced a real tragedy during a competition. How can you die at 26? Yet this is what happened to Gino Mäder during the Tour of Switzerland… How can you die when you still have everything to live for… I have thought a lot and I still often think about this young rider, his family and his friends," stated Jaap Van Hulten as he proposed his SafeR project, in quotes collected by Wielerflits. “The creation of a joint organization, SafeR, which had been in the pipeline before the tragedy, was announced a few days later. We have many other challenges to overcome together, but I wanted to focus on this crucial aspect here.”
