On December 23, 2021, Amy Pieters fell during a training with the national track selection near Calpe. She was flown by air ambulance to Alicante hospital, where life-saving surgery immediately followed. She was in a coma for months. In fact, she has only been making real progress in her rehabilitation since January of this year. The winter issue of RIDE Magazine contains an interview with her parents Peter and Will Pieters.
"Amy has recently attended the weddings of Roxane Knetemann and Riejanne Markus. When you see the photos, she is really beaming," says father Peter. "She is doing quite well at the moment. She suffers from aphasia and her cognitive part is also affected. It is a heavy test for everyone around her."
Her mother Will shows a video of Amy cycling independently, although someone still has to walk next to her. It is another leap forward compared to the tricycle she used to cycle with. She is still making progress in motoric skills. "You see the smile on her face when she cycles. She enjoys that. She is now practicing to get up independently if she stumbles. That didn't work in the beginning, but it's working reasonably well now."
Her parents are committed to Amy's progress. "But she is far from where she needs to be," Peter is realistic. "She can manage, but she cannot function independently. If she could do things on her own again, a world would open up for her. She is still dependent on others."
