Lars van der Haar is a traditional figure in cyclocross and his first goal fits with those of past generation. Despite having raced two World Cups - and won one of them - Lars van der Haar is ready to tackle his first big goal of the winter, the Koppenbergcross.
“I still lacked power in [Nacht van] Woerden, but on Sunday I was perfectly fine. I am trying to grow to my best level, but winning was still a surprise,” van der Haar told Wielerflits. “It was already difficult to win against the established order. But some young guests have also joined this year, which makes it even more difficult. It no longer matters where you win, it is always important.”
Van der Haar carries tremendous talent currently on the CX bike and after a super season in 2022-2023, he started off this year similarly. Winner in Maasmechelen this Sunday, he looks to win again on the Koppenbergcross, a race which he won last year. “But now Wednesday's Koppenbergcross was actually my first peak. My idea is always, if you are good at the Koppenberg, that will also be the case at the European Championships."
With both races this week in mind, van der Haar has geared up to what is one of the key weeks of the season. He is looking to race for all the three cups for the time being - this may change in the near future - but that doesn't prevent him from properly preparing for what are the biggest events. "This year the European Championship course is a little more difficult to really focus on, because it is a lap that is very easy to follow if it is not muddy," he concludes in anticipation to Pontchâteau.
