Thibau Nys continues to break new ground in 2024. After taking big steps in a road season that saw victories at the Tour de Hongrie, the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de Romandie among other races, Nys has now secured himself a first ever Superprestige win in Overijse.
"I have the feeling that I still have to wake up, because this feels like a dream. I don’t know if people realize how hard the past two weeks have been,” Nys reflected in his post-race interview. “I’ve been looking forward to this cyclocross season all summer. And then you have to miss the last weeks of preparation due to illness… I didn’t reach my level by a long shot. It’s very hard to keep your confidence up when you never have a great feeling in training and racing. This was a mental game.”
Despite that self-perceived lack of a top level, the Belgian was incredibly impressive, fighting back from early bad luck to eventually overcome Eli Iserbyt in a thrilling finale. "While in the past races I was raking my wheels with my eyes wide open. There was control now. I never panicked," he assesses. "Once I struggled a bit with my chain, but I felt that I still had a huge final shot in my legs. Is this the result of the investment to go to Spain for a while? No, this is the result of believing in it day in, day out and trying to turn that switch. That is not easy.”
“I hope to continue this, in the coming weeks, months and years," he concludes. "I hope to continue to give spectacle. It is still a matter of being careful for a little while. I hope that I have now started quietly. That does not mean that I will win again next week, but that I will face a consistent winter again. I would dream of that.”
