The UCI has acted in the wake of Eli Iserbyt's actions against Ryan Kamp in the altercation that marked the cyclocross race in Beringen. The Belgian stepped on the derailleur of his former teammate, breaking it, before Kamp pulled him and a heated exchange of words took place. It took a week but the Belgian now takes in meaningful consequences.
“Eli has already apologized publicly, as well as to Kamp himself," team manager Jurgen Mettepenningen reacted. "I had hoped that his punishment with a disqualification and fine was already behind him. This additional sanction will affect the Superprestige ranking. In addition, Eli also misses out on starting fees and this is also a shame for the organizers of these three races. The UCI could have solved this differently.”
Iserbyt has been suspended for three races which is not a disaster at this point of the season, but does mean he will miss the first round of the Superprestige Cup in which he is the defending champion. Aditionally, he will pay a 2500 Swiss Francs fine already on top of the 100 he had previously payed,
Iserbyt has indeed raced this week in Ardooie, winning the men's race and is currently in good form. This set of races he will miss out on will have an impact on the upcoming European Championships which will take place in two weeks in Pontevedra, Spain. The Pauwels Sauzen - Bingoal rider is certainly looking to be at the Koppenbergcross and this specific race with great form in search of big wins early in the season.
