What a day to conclude the 2023 @UCI_CX World Championships! 🙌 Men Junior 🥇 Léo Bisiaux 🇫🇷 Women U23 🥇 Shirin van Anrooij 🇳🇱 Men Elite 🥇 Mathieu van der Poel 🇳🇱 #Hoogerheide2023
The World Championship held in Hoogerheide was a visual feast for everyone. The final competition between Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel was thrilling and raised the bar for the sport. It is possible that the sport will expand to New York, the financial capital of the world.
Peter Van den Abeele, UCI Deputy Sports Director and Head of Off-Road disciplines, expressed his views on the event. "It was a super nice World Championship, and there was no hostility. This was another World Championship like before the covid period. Unfortunately, there is only one winner, but the sport definitely wins," he told Sporza.
The conversation turned to the unveiling of this year's calendar, to which he responded. "That will be done on the eve of the Omloop. There are still some thorny points that need to be resolved. Benidorm and Dublin were windfalls this season, and we are taking steps forward with Flanders Classics."
The lack of success in the two World Cup events held in the USA this season has prompted him to consider reducing the number of events to just one in the hope of better results. “Fayetteville was disappointed with the small field, and I think we may only have 1 game in the US next season. Whether that still make sense? It makes the trip shorter for the riders and the cost goes down."
He also disclosed in the end that there are ongoing negotiations to host the World Cup in New York. "There is always discussion about the number of races. I don't think there are too many, but we have to keep expanding to big cities, and we have to keep the classics. Negotiations are underway with New York,” concluded Van den Abeele.
