Whilst the wait for Cameron Mason's first Superprestige victory goes on, his second-placed finish on Saturday afternoon in Boom marks another positive showing in what has been a season of impressive results.
“It was fun,” the British national champion, who lives close to the circuit, said in his post-race interview. “I walked to the cross today, I can almost see my apartment from here. It was also a great race. Quite a lonely race. I tried to close the gap, but I was at my max. But it is nice to take a podium place again in such a big race. I am one step closer to victory.”
Joris Nieuwenhuis was the eventual winner on the day, with Mason coming home 10 seconds down, despite a brave fight to get back into contact. “It may have seemed more dramatic on television than it actually was," Mason laughs. "It was a bit slow motion. There were stretches where he was better, then laps where I was better. But I was never in the wheel. Until you're in the wheel, it's never really a battle. It was more of a time trial."
"I did my best, but the strongest won. I will try again next time,” the 23-year-old concludes. “I know it only takes one mistake from him. So I didn't stop believing, but in the end I came second.”
