Mathieu van der Poel's victory at the UCI
World Cup in Hulst was sadly overshadowed by a controversial incident on the final lap as the Dutchman spat at a group of spectators.
As more details emerge of the incident in the hours since, it's now been alleged that the supporters in question threw urine and beer over the world champion prior to his retorting with a spit. "No, those Belgian ‘fans’ were throwing urine and beer at him. I stood next to them," says an attendee on X (Twitter).
It must be said though, the user was unable to back up his claim with any video or picture of the alleged urine throwing when questioned for proof by Thijs Zonneveld.
