Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado managed to win silver in the European cyclocross championships in Namur. She was only second to Fem van Empel who surprised everyone with his performance .
Even though she was unable to take gold, she is more than happy to with silver. "Whether this is a surprise? Maybe for many people, it is, but not for us. This was coming. I knew what I could do here, everything was long and I rode a good race. Except for that skid, but that wasn't really in my control. It was a beautiful day,” Alvarado said.
She continues, "It was a pretty dry edition, but it was still enough sliding, and there were enough technical strips to make the difference. Besides that, I felt good. I didn't realize at first that Fem was unlucky but saw her running back in the post. I saw something was wrong but then decided not to attack. It was another long cross, and you can run into you here pretty quickly. I did force something here and there, but she came back."
The race took an interesting turn in the final lap when Van Empel managed to outpace Alvarado. "We were the strongest women in the race and made it a nice battle. I don't think I could have done anything differently. The uphill sections suited her a little better than the technical sections were for me. It was a bit of a cat-and-mouse game. We were evenly matched, and both rode a good cross," concluded Alvarado.
