Average Rob has found an alternative solution for his participation in the cross in Diegem on December 28. Robert van Impe, as the YouTuber is really called, stated via his X account earlier this week. This comes a response to those who claimed it to have been unfair towards other participants.
Jos Smets, the former director of Belgian Cycling, explains this about the licenses. "For international A competitions, such as the cross in Diegem, a rule is that Elite 2 riders must either have UCI points or must have collected 25 points in national competitions. This rule was introduced to prevent riders from starting who are not suitable for the A competitions."
That rule has not been met: "Average Rob does not meet the points criteria, despite his license. You therefore cannot give priority to such a person, especially not because he is famous. That is not correct towards other riders. So he will have to look for those 25 points." However, the YouTuber was not deterred and managed to create a way out in collaboration with Diegem.
"We are in discussions with Diegem Cross and Belgian Cycling to find an alternative that works for everyone," he said on Friday, before reporting on Saturday that a solution had been found. "We have an agreement! More information will come soon. It is something very unique and completely compliant with regulations. Win-win-win."
