Yves Lampaert believes that the Belgians can be very proud after the European Cycling Championships in Drenthe. The Belgian also said that it was agreed in advance that Arnaud De Lie would do the lead-out for Wout van Aert.
"But of course they also had to discuss along the way," Lampaert said in an interview after the race which he finished 17th himself.
Lampaert, who did a lot of work himself, speaks of a collectively strong performance by the Belgian national team. "I think we rode very strongly as a team. We controlled the race and made it hard. I think we can be very proud of our achievement. We did what we had to do, it's a shame for Wout that it is second place."
"When it came to a sprint, Arnaud had to do the lead-out for Wout," Lampaert continued. "But of course they also had to discuss during the race." Despite De Lie's strong lead-out, Van Aert was no longer able to keep up with his teammate at Jumbo-Visma, Christophe Laporte. "Laporte is not just any rider, of course. He has won Dwars door Vlaanderen and Gent-Wevelgem and stages in the Critérium du Dauphiné."
