Wout van Aert shared the same surprise, as the team plan went way better than expected and not only was an impressive victory achieved, both van Aert and most importantly Roglic have gotten meaningful time on their GC rivals: “We had the plan to make the race hard on the climb. We thought this could be a good move for both my chances of winning and the standings for Primoz."
After doing a great work through the technical roads before the final hilltop to Côte de Breul-Bois-Robert, Jumbo-Visma entered the ascent with the peloton lined up and the work of Nathan van Hooydonck and Christophe Laporte split the peloton completely. The trio of Laporte,
Primoz Roglic and van Aert distanced themselves from the peloton and easily took what was a very special win.
"Christophe then took over from Nathan so hard that we immediately put everyone on the limit. I was also surprised that at the top there were only three of us left. Then it's just full gas to the finish. I think this is a great victory for Christophe in his own country, with the yellow jersey that comes with it. I wholeheartedly wish him that victory," Van Aert concluded.
