The Dutch team
Jumbo-Visma took no time to get their wins up to speed at
Paris-Nice and took an unthinkable 1-2-3 victory on the opening stage.
Christophe Laporte was allowed the opening win after the trio of him,
Wout van Aert and
Primoz Roglic attacked on the final climb.
The breakaway was composed by just Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) and Aimé de Gendt (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux). The duo didn't have to spend much energy as the peloton let them go, and posteriorly caught them with just under 90 kilometers of racing as the teams of the overall classification contenders looked to keep their leaders safe. For a while the race was very tense, but calmed down as the peloton headed towards the final circuit, with Felix Grossschartner (BORA - hansgrohe) suffering a low-speed crash that saw him abandon.
With the calm, Frederik Frison, Alexis Gougeard and Yevgeniy Fedorov then took to the head of the race with 45 kilometers to go, but would later be caught with 12 kilometers to go. Jumbo-Visma did a strong work to reel the group back and set up for the last hilltop of the stage, where the Dutchman drilled the front with Nathan van Hooydonck and Christophe Laporte, breaking the peloton to bits.
At the end of the climb the unthinkable happened, as Laporte united with Wout van Aert and Primoz Roglic off the front of the peloton. The trio got a gap and extended it, with an incredible display of power, and easily managed to kepe the peloton in distance, taking a one-two-three win at Mantes-la-Ville.
Laporte was given the win by his teammates, with the trio taking all bonus seconds and an extra 22 seconds on the peloton.
