“We’ve seen the team knows how to make the most of the product" - Study looks into Team Visma | Lease a Bike's use of controversial ketones

There has been much discussion regarding the use of ketones in the peloton. With some suggesting they should be banned and others citing a placebo effect, a study has taken an in-depth look at Team Visma | Lease a Bike's use of the controversial substance.

“Our studies with Visma-Lease a Bike will prove the product is the best all-round source of fuel for cyclists,” Ketone-IQ spokesperson Kierra Nogara told Velo. “We’re testing elite cyclists using Visma’s stage-race ketone protocol to see how Ketone-IQ affects performance, and particularly recovery. We’ve seen the team knows how to make the most of the product. We want to test that method and extrapolate it out.”

With Team Visma | Lease a Bike's Mathieu Heijboer previously having attempted to quash any controversy around ketones, explaining how "they're not some magic potion," in a previous conversation with Velo, Nogara wants to shed more light on the benefits of ketones when applied correctly. “We want to improve the product for all athletes and learn more so the team can apply those lesson at the Tour de France and the rest of the cycling calendar,” Nogara explains.

“You can get pretty good recovery with food and sleep, but you’re definitely not recovering 100 percent every day, so there’s still a gap left,” Team Visma | Lease a Bike star Matteo Jorgenson adds. “Any extra fuel source that you can add to your body to give it just a little bit more helps.”
