Andreas Kron specializes in the punchy hilly finales and today he found the perfect set of circumstances to net himself a victory in the Vuelta a Espana. He has dedicated the victory to Tijl de Decker, Lotto Dsnty Development Team's rider who passed away recently.
“I didn't know Tijl personally, but many guys in the team did. Especially Lennert Van Eetvelt. We are still devastated. This is the best way to show that we keep going, for him," Kron told Eurosport after netting what was the biggest win of his still short career. "We miss him. I would have liked to have known him. We will always fight for him.”
The GC time neutralization with 9 kilometers to go saw many riders deciding to ignore the fight for the stage win. This narrowed down the field. Kron attacked on the Alto de Montjuic and got a gap that was never again closed, taking advantage of the wet descent and fine form to cross the finish line solo. “It was a difficult year for me personally. I had to miss the Tour de France and then I focused on this stage in the first week of the Vuelta," he said. "It's also the team's first WorldTour win this year, which is really big for us."
It was a very meaningful and important win for the Belgian team for many reasons, but it also makes the race for them very early on. “And for us as a group it is also beautiful. We've been together for a long time to be in top shape here, and now we've already won a ride. Hopefully we will win more stages, I think we can do that," he concluded.
