Will the women get their own version of
Milano-Sanremo in 2025, including climbs of the Cipressa and the Poggio? It looks very likely. Giro d'Italia organizer RCS has concrete plans and would like to push them through in the coming weeks. The only obstacle is finding an agreement with the
Trofeo Alfredo Binda.
The call for their own version of Milano-Sanremo has been a theme in the women's peloton for some time. World champion
Lotte Kopecky: "I would think it was super cool." RCS wants to respond to that wish in 2025.
However, the date still seems to be the biggest obstacle. According to HLN, RCS wants to organize the women's edition on the same day as the men's edition - the third Saturday of March. That date is still available on the calendar, but the Trofeo Alfredo Binda is on the program the day after.
"We really want our own version of Milano-Sanremo, but I and the majority of my colleagues do not want it to be at the expense of the Trofeo Binda, a race that has almost the status of a monument among the ladies," said Kopecky.
The UCI and the Italian federation also want to leave the Trofeo Binda in its honor and glory. According to HLN, it would be an option to move the Trofeo Binda to a week earlier. So you have Strade-Bianche in the first weekend of March, Trofeo Binda in the second weekend of March and Milano-Sanremo in the third weekend of March. However not everyone will be happy wth this solution.
