"Was that the reason G was sweating so much?" - Philippe Gilbert questions Thomas's use of Giro d'Italia skinsuit in decisive stage 20 time-trial

In the decisive stage 20 time-trial at the 2023 Giro d'Italia, Geraint Thomas would see his 26-second race lead overturned by Primoz Roglic as the Jumbo-Visma leader took the Maglia Rosa. It is the opinion of Philippe Gilbert that the fact as race leader, Thomas had to use the organization's suit rather than an INEOS Grenadiers one may have played a part.

Taking to his official Twitter account, the Belgian Classics legend posed the question. "One thing I forgot! What was the impact performance wise for the clothing? Rogla with his own TT suit! Against G with the clothing brand of the pink Jersey?" Gilbert asks. "Was that the reason G was sweating so much?"

It must be said that Thomas still finished second on the stage. Only a superhuman performance from Roglic was able to beat the INEOS leader. Whether or not the skinsuit played a part is unsure but following the stage, Thomas refused to make excuses, instead giving Roglic plenty of praise in a classy post-stage interview from the Welshman.

"To be honest: Roglic really deserves it," said the 37-year-old. "He was unlucky with a mechanical and still takes forty seconds on me. Chapeau to him."
