Vingegaard has chaotic Tour day saved and jumps into Jumbo-Visma lead

Jonas Vingegaard suffered from a very stressful moment today at the Tour de France, however managed to save the day with the support of Jumbo-Visma and now finds himself in a position where he is the priority.

“It was not the best day for us. It already started with the fall of Wout. As a result, the run-up to the cobblestones was not optimal. Jonas was then hit from behind and had a problem with his material," team DS Grischa Niermann said. Vingegaard inicially switched bikes quickly with a teammate, but after seeing that the difference in size was overwhelming, he stopped once again. Right after the team car arrived and the Dane switched bikes for a third time, with several teammates around which were on high alert and looking to save the situation.

"Changing bikes did not go as discussed in advance, but unfortunately nothing can be changed afterwards... It cannot be a party every day, but it is clear that this is not an outcome that we are satisfied with," Niermann concluded.

Vingegaard had the support of Wout van Aert - who himself had crashed earlier - mainly who pulled him back into the peloton, a work that has proved valuable as the team now remains in the yellow jersey and keeps Vingegaard in striking distance of Tadej Pogacar who has attacked and taken a total of 13 seconds on the 25-year old.
