Did you see it? Mark Cavendish won stage 5 of the Tour de France and alongside it, took all the attention on a day that had a few other striking moments. One was of Tadej Pogacar almost hitting a road traffic island at high speed, and the other was Mads Pedersen crashing against the barriers in the final sprint... And a rider bunny hopping over him.
This is what happened today in the sprint at Saint-Vulbas. As Mark Cavendish raced to the left of the road, a few other riders made the same move. Ultimately there was no space for everyone in an all-out sprint and Mads Pedersen crashed mid-sprint against the barriers - luckily, he did not seem to suffer very meaningful injuries.
Most shockingly was that only a split second later, at full speed, Cofidis' Axel Zingle apparently managed to do a bunny hop over the Danish rider that was still moving on the ground after hitting it. The French rider successfully jumped over Pedersen and avoided crashing in the most impressive way.
You can check the zoomed in footage of the incident in the video below:
It was an incredibly skillful move by Alex Zingle, and best of all is that it just seemed to come as second nature for him.
If you don't think cyclists are more than just endurance performers, you are mistaken. Many are great athletes in other ways as well. Not sure what others sport involves bunny-hopping, but you get my point. 😀
