Stage 15 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia poses as the queen stage of the race and the biggest challenge the riders will face in the opening Grand Tour of the season. Despite the ominous task looming, the atmosphere was bouncing in the Lidl-Trek team bus pre-stage.
Belting out the classic ABBA karaoke anthem 'Dancing Queen', Edward Theuns and the Maglia Ciclamino, Jonathan Milan in particular were getting themselves into the mood for the monstrous day of mountains ahead that includes five categorised climbs over 222 kilometres and summits of the Passo del Mortirolo, with a finale at high altitude close to the famous ski station in Livigno.
With a stage such as the one this Sunday afternoon, it's unlikely Milan will be able to make much of an impact on the day and add another stage win to his growing collection. The best hope for Lidl-Trek would seem to be the diminutive Spanish climber and recent Tour of the Alps winner, Juan Pedro Lopez. If the Spaniard is able to dance up the climbs, it's possible he could get back into top-10 contention.
