For the first time in his career, Davide Bais is a race winner. Taking a shock breakaway win on stage 7 of the Giro d'Italia, even Bais himself was surprised at the result.
"My first stage as a professional has finally arrived, I'm very happy. It was a bit unexpected because today my job was to break away to be able to help Lorenzo Fortunato at the end and I'm very happy," stated the 25-year-old Italian of EOLO-Kometa in his post-stage interview. "I want to dedicate my victory for the squad."
With the expected battle between the general classification riders stalling behind them, Bais and his breakaway companions Karel Vacek and Simone Petilli were able to play cat-and-mouse with each other in the finale.
"The inspiration comes from Fortunato when he won in Zoncolan," Bais continued. "I tried it at the end. I was the fastest, but the least strong going up. I tried to make as few efforts as possible. I risked the sprint and it turned out perfect."
