Update: Magnus Sheffield returns home after Tour de Suisse crash and concussion

The final descent of stage 5 at the Tour de Suisse has proven to be an incredibly dangerous one. Magnus Sheffield of the INEOS Grenadiers was one of the riders involved, as he crashed in a ravine as did the late Gino Mäder.

“I am sorry that we are descending such a steep climb in the full finale. Sheffield even flew into the ravine," Remco Evenepoel revealed to HLN in his post-race interview. Romain Bardet also saw the incident and sent his best wishes to the INEOS rider. “That fall looked very severe. I hope he's doing well, because he seemed seriously injured."

In an official announcement on the Twitter account of the INEOS Grenadiers it has now been revealed that Sheffield has been forced to abandon the race.

"Unfortunately, Magnus Sheffield has been forced to abandon Tour de Suisse2023 after a crash in the GC group in the closing stages of stage 5," the post reads. "We'll have a further update on Magnus in due course."

UPDATE: Tour de Suisse has issued a statement on the condition of the American, revealing that "Magnus Sheffield was responsive. He was transported to the Samedan hospital with bruises and a concussion."

UPDATE II: On the morning of the 18th of June the American has been discharged from the hospital following his injuries. INEOS Grenadiers have informed that Sheffield will be returning home for a period of rest and recovery.
