Miguel Ángel López won the first stage of the Vuelta a Colombia in a sprint. The Team Medellin - EPM rider commented after his victory that for safety his team put him in the lead and he took advantage of it to get into the final sprint.
"Happy with the great work, with how well the teammates have done today and the truth is that we deserve it," he said in a post-race interview. "I was thinking about whether to try or not, because we had to reward the teammates for that great work. The road was dangerous, we were coming ahead as if to save the day, to avoid some inconvenience, some problem, and I decided to give it a try".
Regarding the second stage, which has a somewhat more mountainous profile although it could also end in a sprint, he thinks it will be harder and hopes it doesn't rain.
"Tomorrow (for today's stage) is quite hard, in Boyacá is the altitude, we change climate. Every time we go from Boyacá to Bogotá it changes. I hope the day is good, that it doesn't rain, because this stage is tricky," he concludes.
