Well in the end, those last 5 km were pretty amazing. We had Carapaz back at his best, Lipowitz dropping his team leader Vlasov, Carlos Rodriguez winning the GC after Bernal smashed it and Ayuso pedalling squares. Not bad at all! #TDR2024
After his remarkable performance in Friday's time trial, Juan Ayuso lost the lead of the Tour de Romandie in the queen stage as he cracked on the climb to Leysin. Carlos Rodríguez took over the race lead into the final day, but the GC is even tighter!
Ayuso was dropped in the final kilometers of the climb and completely cracked, with support of UAE Team Emirates not being enough to save him from a meaningful time loss. Carlos Rodríguez finished third on the day after a lot of work from INEOS Grenadiers and is the new race leader.
The Spanish INEOS Grenadiers rider will defend the yellow jersey on Sunday with a 7-second lead over second-placed Aleksandr Vlasov, who was fifth on the day and his BORA - hansgrohe teammate Florian Lipowitz, third at 9 seconds after coming close to the stage win just behind Richard Carapaz. Due to his collapse, Ayuso has dropped five positions, and is now 27 seconds behind Rodriguez. Enric Mas is sixth, 38 seconds off the lead, with stage winner Carapaz now sitting seventh.
