Tom Pidcock had a small cyclocross season as he aims to reach his best form this spring at the Ardennes classics, and then the Tour de France-Olympic Games combo. His first race of the season is the Volta ao Algarve and so far the feedback is quite good.
“I think there were quite a lot of positives to take from yesterday (Alto da Fóia, ed.). I didn’t have a kick at the end, but I was pretty comfortable. I did some really good numbers on the longer periods, and it was a positive start," Pidcock shared with Cyclingnews. "I’m always someone who takes a while to get in race rhythm, I’ve always been like that, so pretty happy with where I was."

The INEOS Grenadiers rider was sixth in the summit finish, and enters today's time-trial in the same position. Overall success is unlikely, but it is a promising sign ahead of the spring. The Briton will have a packed schedule after a long winter of training and preparing for the road, and this afternoon he will test another discipline that he has been spending time on.
“Of course, in the time trial, I want to put in a good effort, and I want to improve on last year. I’ve been putting some time in on that, it’s important because if I want to achieve anything in a GC," he admits. Pidcock will try to go for the overall classification at the Tour de France later this year. "Then I need to improve on my time trials. It’s something I’ve done well in the past, but only after putting the work in. You don’t get anything for free for that, so that’s been a bit of a focus this winter. Then, on the last stage, I want to try and do the same thing as well.”
