The second stage of the
Vuelta a Burgos was highlighted by a terrible crash inside the final 500 meters, to which
Jumbo-Visma greatly benefited by taking the first three spots on the stage due to their positioning in the front.
In a post-race interview,
Timo Roosen, who ended up the stage winner, has said: “It went very fast in that last part towards the last straight line and the last corner was 250 meters from the finish. We took the lead as a team and Edoardo Affini went full throttle from the sign of the last kilometer," he said. "But suddenly there was a speed bump, out of nowhere. I hardly noticed it because of the high speed.”
On that speed bump, David Dekker who was in his wheel, lost control of the bike and crashed, taking several riders down. “I heard something, but I didn't know what was happening. I also saw someone sitting in my wheel and thought it was David [Dekker]," he said, referring to teammate Chris Harper who miraculously managed to stay upright. "But only after the finish did I hear that he had fallen."
The former Dutch road race champion ended up crossing the line first, in celebration. However when he learnt about what happened behind him after the stage, the mood was not the same. “It's nice to have on my record and we want to fight here as a team every day for a stage win, but I would rather have won in a different way," he explained. "Because of such a big fall… That's not the nicest way to win a stage of course."
