"I lost complete control" - David Dekker on brutal Vuelta a Burgos crash

Today's second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos ended with three Jumbo-Visma riders on the top of the standings, however their designated leader David Dekker was the first rider to go down in the event that most marked the day.

Whilst Timo Roosen went on to take the stage win, Dekker was laying on the ground less than 500 meters before the finish. He hit a speed bump which was positioned very close to the finish in a slightly downhill section. Having lost control over the bike, he hit the deck hard, followed by several riders who could not avoid the incident. The crash has once again sparked debate over how the race failed to follow the safety measures, and questions are being asked regarding whose responsibility it is for this crash.

Dekker, who was in third place of the peloton when he crashed, has shared on social media a message saying he is ""okay" considering what happened". He added that "nothing is broken, except my moral, but I have lots of wounds".

"I did not see the speed bump coming and with that high speed in a downhill I lost complete control. I sincerely hope everybody involved is okay and will recover soon. Thank you for all your messages," his message read. Dekker's season has been very complicated and today was an opportunity to bounce back from it, but it ended in disaster. All riders managed to cross the line at the end of the day, however tonight will surely be full of injury updates as several riders got caught up in what was one of the scariest situations of the year in the peloton.
