Phil Bauhaus had won a stage at Tirreno-Adriatico earlier this year, and today he won number two again in the World Tour, with a strong sprint and teamwork in the finale of the fifth stage.
"In a bunch sprint, it’s not always about having the best legs; it’s also about the team, tactics, and timing. I was second on day 1, and I’ve proved this year I’m one of the best sprinters in the world, so the team and I have always been confident that I can win a lot of races at WorldTour level," Bauhaus said in a post-race interview. "It was just a matter of time before I won again".
Although hilly, the peloton rode the fifth day of the Polish race with a conservative pace, without attacks that could take out the large field of sprinters. The fast men would end up having a regular bunch sprint, with
Bahrain - Victorious playing it out to perfection.
“I had Jonny [Milan] for the final leadout and I’m super happy I could finish it off," he said. The pair were in front after a large crash left the fight for the win down to a handful of riders, and with a perfectly timed leadout, the German had the pole position into the final meters. "He’s proved these last few days that he’s super strong, and he left me in 1st position in the last 150m, and I’m super happy I could win," he exclamated.
"My legs are good, I’m in great condition & I’m in one of the best teams in the world; we’ve proved that together as a team, we can win a lot of races, so I’ll hope to get another result in Krakow," Bauhaus concluded.
