Alpecin-Fenix's
Tim Merlier was set to head to the
Giro d'Italia as a team leader, trying to replicate his success of 2021, however the plans seems to be changing due to Merlier's crash at the recent edition of Paris-Roubaix.
The information was reported by Sporza, who affirm that Merlier will not be at the start of the Giro d'Italia in order to focus on the treatment of his injuries at Paris-Roubaix. Merlier crashed during the race at the Carrefour de l'Arbre sector which caused a deep wound in his right elbow.
Merlier was aware of how serious his injuries could be, but nevertheless battled on towards the finish where he placed 40th in the velodrome."In retrospect, I should have gotten into an ambulance, but the pain was not too bad. The blood was terrifying. And as a rider you want to reach the finish."
As a result, he's had surgery right after the race this past weekend, and is in the meantime healing it. According to the source though, this will not happen in time for the start in Budapest, which takes place in just 13 days.
