Thomas de Gendt has had a strong return to his winning ways at the Giro d'Italia just last month, however right after the Belgian veteran jumped back into the peloton and has been riding the Tour de Suisse this week.
Albeit under the radar, the Belgian has been suffering with the heat alongside many of his fellow companions in the peloton. However he was not able to complete the race, instead having to abandon during stage seven due to an unexpected injury.
De Gendt revealed on Twitter that on one of the stage's descents, his chain slipped off whilst on a highs-speed descent. Whilst ordinarily the spook would be enough to shake a rider, this event had consequences as de Gendt abandoned the race and Lotto Soudal shared that he had suffered a torn ankle ligament.
Although the Tour de France wasn't in his schedule, this means a break of unknown duration is upon the 35-year old, who will look to recover before targeting races in the closing months of the season.

Mine was on a 60 per hour descent. Trying to sprint and chain slipped off.
