For the first time in his career and after so many close calls, Fred Wright has finally managed to win a professional bike race. Of all the races to win, the fact it was the British National Championships make it extra sweet.
"A race like today is really nice because we're all mates. It was good fun, I really enjoyed today," the 24-year-old from Bahrain - Victorious post-race. "I'm so happy to get that win. It was separated into three segments, and it was so attritional. Even when guys went up the road and have 30 seconds they came back fairly quickly."
Edging out James Knox and Stephen Williams in an exciting finale, Wright avenged the most recent of his second placed finishes at the British national time-trial. "It was all about legs this course. My problem is that sometimes I do too much work, but the work you do on a course like this is rewarded," he explains. "It's not just the bike race, it's being able to wear the stripy jersey and then also for the rest of my career, I'll have a little GB band on my jersey as well."
And after finally getting that illusive first win, Wright is hoping it will soon become a regular occurrence. "It means a lot to win this and I can't wait for the next year. I think this will open the floodgates," he predicts. "We will see what the Tour is saying and beyond. To be national champ, it's pretty special.”
