Caja Rural's Iuri Leitao surprised Viviani and Kristoff, winning stage 2 of @cro_race with a great uphill kick in Novalja. 👍 Kudos also to his teammate, Aular who let his wheel go, voluntarily or not. #CROrace
Caja Rural - Seguros RGA's Iuri Leitao took a big victory on stage 2 of the 2023 CRO Race, beating the likes of Elia Viviani and Alexander Kristoff in a bunch sprint.
Whilst many had expected Orluis Aular to be Caja Rural's choice for the sprint, the Venezuelan national champion instead opted to let Leitao's wheel go and the Portuguese could not be caught. Speaking afterwards, Leitao actually revealed it was all part of the plan.
"It was the plan all day," he smiles. "This is a great victory for me and the whole team, because it is against big names from the WorldTour. I am grateful to my team for their trust and I am happy that I have finally been able to live up to that trust."
"The team therefore worked all day to ensure that I could sit comfortably at the front. On the climbs I immediately felt that I felt good and I was still fresh in the last kilometres. That's why I decided to try from far away."
