- If Evenepoel hadn't attacked Almeida would've lost plenty of time. It wouldn't have been too much, but up to a minute possibly. That'd have been a major blow to his GC ambitions. But Evenepoel was too selfish and wanted it alone. That's because not only did he see Almeida as a GC rival but he also saw his teammate Lipowitz in the same light. And thus his crash was well deserved.
For Almeida it's another lesson which he needs to learn from. He's repeatedly shown with his poor positioning that he doesn't know how to ride as a leader. But he doesn't seem the learn - this time it was with no consequences but there have been occasions where he has faced the pointy end of the stick, such as in Paris-Nice last year. He's not beating Vingegaard like this.
- With the climb being removed this is for Godon to make it 3, but 2800+ m of climbing is not nothing and it rises to the finish. If the pace is pushed it could become hard
- So somehow the pothole only met Remco and none of the other riders. I suspect he was pissed off at Jonas and not concentrating on the road and when the roundabout came he was inattentive and he braked and met "pothole".
I wonder if it is so easy to get rid of him just dont relay and piss him off and he goes and crashes or does all the work.
- There's a difference between sucking Evenepoel’s wheel in order to outsprint him at the finish and taking the win because he crashed. It was Evenepoel’s choice to keep on working with Vingegaard in his wheel. But it was not in his hands once he crashed.
Also the manner in which the stage win came to them as a possibility is significant. It was an opportunistic attack to see what they could do. If they had both attacked on a climband ridden away due to their greater strength it would not have been blameworthy for Vingegaard to take the win. This was a road race (if it were in Paris-Roubaix, de Ronde van Vlaanderen, Strade Bianche or anything else like that, even Milano-Sanremo, it'd be different).
- Adrenaline?
- Totally get that, almost happened to me this week, not even a pothole, just an intact surface sunk into a hardly visible depression, not a good moment to reach for water. Always reminds me of Contador’s crash.
- Says he didn't take advantage but he sure had no problem sucking Remco's wheel for 28k and never pulling.
- Makes sense. I've been caught out when moving my hands and the road surface deals a surprise. Unexpected potholes can really wreak havoc.
- What's happening with Groenewegen?! He's won his last 3 races, and 4 for the year. He looks better than he has in years. He'll never return to his best year of 2019, but he's doing really well for URR. It's really interesting to see past World Tour riders riding for URR, Pinarello Q36, and Tudor. I'm enjoying this!
- Pipe down Alpha Dog, or whatever it is you call yourself when you’re dancing in front of the mirror.
