Esteban Chaves tried it with an attack six kilometers from the finish line in the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The Colombian champion had a half minute advantage over the favorites and was finally caught with 500 meters to go, but was satisfied with the good feelings.
The EF Education-EasyPost rider commented after the stage on why he tried to win from afar: "It was a very exhausting stage, Jumbo was going very fast and we were lucky to have a rider on the breakaway and in the end, taking into account how Roglic sprints and how Remco sprints, we have to try from afar. If you wait and do the race with them most likely when you sprint you won't be as fast".
Chaves wanted to highlight that he is in very good shape to face the next stages: "We have to try, luckily or unfortunately we stayed on the edge of the win. It escaped by very little. The important thing is that we have very good legs and very good feelings, that we started the race on the right foot and there is still a week left very hard and as always cycling is a wear sport," he concluded.
The Colombian was caught close to the finish and was dropped, but finished 7th 15 seconds behind stage winner Giulio Ciccone. He's now eighth in the overall classification after a brave attack that came close to succeeding. Tomorrow's summit finish at La Molina and the summit finish at Lo Port will be two more opportunities for the Colombian to succeed.
