Rémi Cavagna displayed an incredible solo performance in the first stage of the
Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, winning the race with no other riders in sight. He made his move with 42 kilometers to go and maintained his lead until the end.
He successfully built a gap of more than 1 minute and 30 seconds, which although reduced in the final kilometers, was still sufficient for him to cross the finish line on his own. “Coming into the race, the plan was to ride every stage as a one-day race,” he disclosed on his team’s website.
He continues, “My thought at the start of the day was to try something in the last ten kilometres, but I sensed an opportunity on that final climb and just followed my instinct. Once I got a gap, I tried to keep the power and went all-in for the victory, as this really motivated me.”
As of now, he hasn't made any plans to challenge the GC and will respond according to the situation. “Having had a good start to the season I was confident at the start of the race, and this win will be a huge morale-boost. We have our win and now we’ll see what the next stages will bring,” concluded the Frenchman.
