After the success of the Vuelta a Espana roll out in the Netherlands in 2022, race director Javier Guillén has revealed he is fielding calls from across the world from nations asking to host future departures.
"The departure in 2022 from Utrecht, in the Netherlands, was a total success," Guillen tells AS. "For this reason, the idea of starting again from abroad is probable, both in the short and medium term. We have many requests to host the start of the race."
But where realistically could we see the Vuelta begin? As we've seen in the past when the Giro d'Italia's grand departure took place in Israel in 2018, proximity to the races spiritual home is not always a necessity. "Monte Carlo could be a possibility, but nothing is defined yet. They also call us from Latin America, but I see this as more difficult for now."
"More probable, however, is to fix the departure of a Vuelta from Africa. A country like Morocco would be strategic for our journey: we have already spoken to them, the Atlas and Marrakech areas would be ideal," Guillen continues. "I think it's the best moment in cycling and this sport is still growing."
