Demi Vollering launched a brutal, solo attack on the famed slopes of the Col du Tourmalet at the 2023 Tour de France Femmes on Saturday. Winning the stage, Vollering also gain a firm grip of the general classification.
"Her lead is sufficient and this time trial suits her," says Sporza analyst Ine Beyen, not believing in a dramatic Annemiek Van Vleuten comeback. "She worked hard on this part and her position on the bike has been adjusted. So normally we know the overall winner."
The Team SD Worx leader now holds an advantage of 1:50 over Katarzyna Niewiadoma and 2:28 over Van Vleuten. "Vollering must have been bitten by all the criticism. And we cannot deny that SD Worx was still there in the final yesterday with three: Reusser, Kopecky and Vollering," continues Beyen.
"Mentally she has become much stronger. She recently said it herself in an interview: it was only last winter that she trained hard for the first time as a professional should do," concludes the analyst. "She has gotten better and Van Vleuten has not. It is not just Vollering who suddenly stands out, it is a combination. Demi has already ridden an incredibly strong season and everyone expected this. It is extra nice if you realize it as a big favourite. She is a very justified winner."
